Types of Monounsaturated Fats
Monounsaturated fats differ in the number of carbons in their chemical structures. A monounsaturated fat with 18 carbons and one double bond is notated as "18:1." Also important is the placement of the double bond. An omega-9 fatty acid is notated as "n-9."
The following are all monounsaturated fats:
- Palmitoleic Acid (C16:1)
- Oleic Acid (18:1n-9)
- Eicosenoic Acid (20:1)
- Erucic acid (22:1n-9)
- Nervonic acid (24:1n-9)
