Background
In July 2014, the chief minister of Punjab said the government was planning to build 110 MW coal power plants (2 x 55 MW) near industrial load centers in seven big cities: Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Multan and Lahore.[1]
In September 2015 dozens of protesters from Multan's neighboring town of Muzaffargarh staged a sit-in outside the Multan Press Club demanding the government abandon the proposed coal plant in Multan. The demonstrators stated that the proposed plant would ruin their agricultural land, and that the plant was not needed because there was already 6,000 MW of electricity capacity in the area. The demonstration was organized by the People’s Action Committee.[2]
