Muzaffargarh power station

The power station consists of the following units: three units of 210 MW each, two of 200 MW each, and one of 310 MW. They were completed between 1993 and 1996, and are fueled by natural gas and furnace oil. The power station is owned and operated by state-owned Northern Power Generation Company Limited (GENCO-III).[1]
In July 2013 Pakistan officials sources said it was planning for the conversion of existing furnace oil-based plants at Muzaffargarh to "lower cost" imported coal. The sources said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had already refused to fund the conversion of the plant,[2] but in August 2015 Russia's Development and ‘Technopromexport’ (TPE) expressed interest in the project.[3]
However, as of August 2015 there has been no further developments on the conversion, but talks of new coal plants in Muzaffargarh through Chinese assistance: Mahmoodkot power station and Mouza Saddan Wali power station.
A March 2016 USAID factsheet stated that USAID was working with the Pakistani government on rehabilitation of the Muzaffargarh power plant; the factsheet does not mention anything about conversion to coal.[4]
In May 2017, Pakistan and China announced that this project was being dropped from the CPEC Energy Cooperation Project.[5]
