In 2017 it was replaced with the NA4 CHP plant, fueled by biomass and waste.[1]

Location

Background
The Naantali CHP power station is a 375 MWt combined heating and power station built between 1960 and 1972. It includes one 116 MW unit and two 125 MW units. The plant is fueled with bituminous coal, oil, refinery off-gas, biomass, and oil. Coal is imported via the attached coal port. In addition to electricity, the plants produces district heat for the Turku regional district heating network and steam for nearby industrial facilities. Aggregate electrical output is 145 MW.[2][3]
Retrofit
In April 2014 it was reported that TSME plans to entirely replace the current plant with a biomass and waste plant. The combined heat and power plant will have an installed capacity of 244MW of heat, 145MW of electricity and 50MW of steam. Construction will begin in 2015 and the new CHP plant will come online in 2017. Although original plans were for the plant to be co-fired by coal, TSME said it plans for the unit to be 100% biomass and waste.[4][5]
The new unit was commissioned in December 2017. It uses "biomass from forests, thinning logs, chipped poles, stumps, and industrial by-products such as bark and sawdust, straw, coal."[1]
