Background

The project has been proposed by Nagai Power Private Limited, a subsidiary of KVK Energy.[1] The plant is located near Okkur & Venkidanathangal villages, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, India.[2] (Note: On its website KVK lists the size of the project as 300MW project while the Ministry of Coal states that the company has sought a coal allocation to support a 1320MW project.)

The project was reported to have commenced construction in 2005.[3] Imagery from Google Earth shows beginning after June 2009 and before August 2011. Imagery from September 2012 and June 2014 shows construction activity halted throughout the period, indicating that the project is not progressing.

In May 2015 Nagai Power requested a five-year extension of the project's environmental clearance, first issued on May 27, 2010.[4] The extension was granted in March 2016.[5]

Construction

According to KVK Energy (October 2016), which has photos of the project under construction, the plant will be completed in March 2017.[1] However, Planet satellite imagery from September 2017 through April 2018 shows limited progress. The project appears to be shelved.
