Background

The plant is owned by Hokkaido Electric Power Co. Ltd (HEPCO). Unit 1 was commissioned in 1968 and Unit 2 was commissioned in 1970.

In March 2019 HEPCO announced that both units had been shut down but would not be demolished yet, in case a need for more electricity in Hokkaido arises.
