Background

The project has been proposed by the Nalanda Power Company, a subsidiary of CESC Limited and an associate company of Haldia Energy and Dhariwal Infrastructure.[1]

The commissioning date of the project is unknown but it has been stated will be somewhere in 2013-17 period with power to be sold to the Bihar State Electricity Board.[2]

In its annual report for the year to the end of March 2010 the Nalanda Power Company reported that "preparatory work" for the project "is in progress. Various approvals have been received relating to environment, water intake, construction of chimney etc. Application has been submitted to the State Government for both transfer of government land and acquisition of private land. Preparation of draft EIA report has been completed. Recommendation of CEA/MoP and subsequent decision of Standing Linkage Committee for long term coal linkage is awaited. Application for connectivity and long-term open access for power evacuation will be resubmitted in a new format as per the revised Regulations."[3]

According to CESC's 2013/14 annual report, Nalanda Power Company Limited has signed a MoU with the Bihar State Electricity Board for development of the project. "Further progress will be taken up upon receiving clarity on the land acquisition process which has changed consequent to the new legislation and securing sources of long-term coal supply over the life of the plant."[4]

However, as of September 2016 the project has yet to receive any permits, and plans appear to be deferred or abandoned.

As of December 2016, there is no evidence that Nalanda Power Company continues to exist.
