Background on Plant

In November 2017 Shandong Nanshan Aluminum Co. announced that it planned to build a coal-fired power plant as part of its planned industrial park in Bintan, Riau Islands, Indonesia.[1] In December 2018 a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site and was attended by the Indonesian Minister of Economic Coordination, the Governor of the Riau Islands Provincial Government, the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Medan Sun Ang, and the Chairman of Nanshan Group Song Jianbo. The plant will produce 2 million tons of alumina annually and is scheduled to begin operating in 2021.[2] In February 2019 Nanshan Aluminum announced that its total investment in the project would be US$830 million, Global Aluminum International's total investment would be US$851 million, and that PT Bintan Aluminum Indonesia's total investment would be US$851 million.[3]

In August 2019 Nanshan Aluminum's semiannual report for the year stated that the project has "obtained approval documents for environmental impact assessment in accordance with national regulations" and that land leveling and constrtuction of the industrial park's port has begun.[4]
