The National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) "is a growing membership organization committed to ending U.S.-sponsored torture, and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. Since its formation in January 2006, over 200 religious groups have joined NRCAT, including representatives from the Roman Catholic, evangelical Christian, mainline Protestant, Orthodox Christians, Unitarian, Quaker, Orthodox Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh communities." [1] Helped form the Campaign to Ban Torture.

  • Linda Gustitus – President. Linda is the past board chair of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation and lives in Washington, DC. She is the founder of the Washington Region Religious Campaign Against Torture and is an attorney.
  • Allie Perry – Vice-President. Allie represents both Reclaiming the Prophetic Voice, a regional ecumenical group in CT, and Shalom UCC in New Haven, CT, where she serves as the worship leader. Allie is an ordained UCC minister and lives in New Haven, CT.
  • Brian Walt – Secretary. Brian is a Reconstructionist rabbi who serves as Director of Rabbis for Human Rights – North America. Brian lives in Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
  • Russ Testa – Treasurer. Russ represents the Franciscan Friars – Holy Name Province, where he is director of the Office for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation. He is a member of NRCAT’s Legislative Council and lives in Washington, DC.
  • Representative of national organizations: Mohamed Elsanousi serves the Islamic Society of North America as the Outreach and Communications Coordinator. He lives in Alexandria, VA.
  • Representative of national organizations: Rev. Carol Wickersham is a Presbyterian minister who is the president of No2Torture, a Presbyterian national organization. She teaches at Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin.
  • Representative of regional/local organizations: Dr. Steve Xenakis, who represents Rock Spring UCC in Arlington, VA, is a retired U.S. Army Brig. General and a psychiatrist. Steve serves as an advisor to Physicians for Human Rights, as well as having a psychiatric practice. He lives in Arlington, VA.
  • Representative of regional/local organizations: Elizabeth Sholes is the Director of Public Policy of the California Council of Churches, a participating member. She lives in Sacramento, California.
  • Founder of NRCAT - George Hunsinger, professor of Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, organized the conference that created the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.
