The New World Foundation, a 501c3 public charity based in New York City, was established in 1954 through the will of Anita McCormick Blaine and "grew to maturity during the civil rights era." Through its grants, the Foundation supports "organizations working to strengthen and expand civil rights and the active participation of citizens in American democracy ... [and] to support the building of social movements by supporting organizing, which builds a sustainable mass base of activists in viable organizations." [1]

- "Sleeping with the Enemy," sfbg.com, October 8, 1997: "The New York-based New World Foundation is one of the most prominent funders of progressive social activity in the country. The foundation underwrites such organizations as the Tides Foundation's Military Toxics Project, the Vanguard Public Foundation, the Center for Third World Organizing, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Planned Parenthood. ... But New World, like most foundations, also invests its assets in the stock market -- and doesn't seem to care if its investments clash with its progressive ideals."
