Newport Synfuels Plant
{{#badges: CoalSwarm}} In September 2010, Clean Coal Refining Corp. announced that a feasibility study will determine by early 2011 if a coal synfuels plant will be constructed on a 1,500-acre site at the former Newport Chemical Depot in Vermillion County, Indiana. Clean Coal Refining Corp. expects the study to be completed by the first quarter of 2011, with a decision to develop a facility expected by the second quarter of 2011, said Marty Irwin, director of the Center for Coal Technology Research at Purdue University. Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman directed the center to provide support for the project. If the project is approved, the plant will take two to three years to construct, and would use about 2.5 million tons of coal annually to produce about 8 million barrels of an oil, the majority of which would be further refined into diesel fuel or heating oil, as well as fuel for power plants or possibly coal-derived jet fuel. Clean Coal Refining Corp. plans to capture the carbon for industrial use, like enhanced oil recovery for depleting oil wells.
