News World Communications
News World Communications is, according to a note on the UPI website, "a global media company publishing newspapers and magazines in more than 20 countries and in four languages, acquired United Press International in May 2000." News World Communications is owned by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church.[1] According to an article by Alan Freedman in the Columbia Journalism Review, each member of the board is also a member of the church.
"The Company's flagship newspaper, the Washington Times, was founded in 1982 and has gained a reputation for hard-hitting investigative reporting and thorough coverage of politics and policy. News World also publishes Insight, The World & I, and Washington Golf Monthly magazines. Tiempos del Mundo is a Spanish-language newspaper published in 18 cities throughout the Americas. The Middle East Times, Segye Times and Sekai Nippo are newspapers published in the Middle East, Korea and Japan respectively", the UPI media release stated.
News World announced on April 16, 2004 that they would stop printing Insight on the News, The World & I, and the New York City edition of Noticias del Mundo. This would result in firing 86 people (of a total of 1,200 employees worldwide): all 31 people working at The World & I with 10,000 subscribers, 17 of the 22 employees at the biweekly Insight on the News with 30,000 subscribers, and 38 people working for Noticias del Mundo, a Spanish-language newspaper in New York City. A small staff would stay on to maintain the 'Insight' and 'World & I' web sites.
