Background

In December 2016, the Nishat Group announced that it would be working together with Chinese company TBEA Xinjiang Sun Oasis Company (a subsidiary of Chinese firm TBEA) to build a single-unit, 660-MW coal-fired power plant in the Liaqatpur tehsil of Rahim Yar Khan district in Punjab. The plant would run on imported coal, and was slated for completion by the fourth quarter of 2020. It would cost $956 million, and would be included under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The Punjab Power Development Board had approved the consortium, a letter of intent had been obtained from the Chinese Development Bank, and a feasibility study was underway. Nishat had also hired ENERGEN Infra (Mauritius) Limited to act as an advisor in choosing a Chinese firm for the plant's engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.

In November 2017 the Pakistan National Electric Power and Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) rejected the application of Nishat Energy Limited (NEL) for a generation license for its proposed 660 MW imported coal power plant in Rahim Yar Khan. It is unclear if Nishat Energy will continue to pursue the project.
