Onahama Port

Location
Onahama Port is located on the coast of Iwaki-shi in Fukushima Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is 50 km (30 miles) south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Coal
The foundations of the port were laid in 1747 for the purpose of shipping rice payments collected from each of the feudal domains of Iwaki to Edo. Since the Meiji Era (1868-1912), the port served as a base for shipping coal from the Hitachinaka-Bandai area coal mines to the Tokyo and Yokohama regions.[1]
In May 2011, Onahama Port was selected by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) as one of nine strategic commodity ports to be targeted for improvement under the International Strategic Bulk Port Project, as it was devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Among the nine ports, Onahama Port and Tokuyama Kudamatsu / Ube Port associated with coal import; others were associated with grain or iron ore.[2][3]
