Background
The terminal exports coal from the Ombilin coal mine, also owned and operated by PT Bukit Asam. Situated on 2.81 hectares, the facility is utilized by PTBA and other local coal producers. It has a design capacity of 2 million tonnes throughput per year.[2]
Proposed coal terminal in Padang
In July 2014 it was reported that Indonesia planned to build 14 dedicated coal terminals on the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra in a bid to curb illegal coal exports. One of the proposed locations was Padang. However the government was finding it difficult to obtain private funding for the terminals in the current environment of depressed coal prices.[3]
