A new 660 MW unit is planned at the site.

Location

The plant is located approximately 15 km from Kanpur railway station in Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh.

Background

The power station comprised two 105 MW units commissioned November 1976 and and March 1977. Coal for the power station was supplied from Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Eastern Coalfields Limited.[1] The two units were retired in March 2018.[2]

Expansion plans

In its 2007 Corporate Plan, Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam stated that it planned to commission three additional 100MW units at the Panki Thermal Power Station in July and November 2010 and March 2011.[3]

In the subsequent corporate plan, UPRVUN stated that the expansion of the plant would be 250 MW and stated that, as of March 2011, the plant was "pending for approval of competent authority."[4]

In September 2014 UPRVUN received a terms of reference for a 660 MW unit.[5] The company applied for environmental clearance in January 2016.[6]

The expansion received environmental clearance on June 29, 2017.[7]
