Background

According to the project's 2012 feasibility report by proponent Patratu Energy Limited, the Land required for the power station is about 1050 acres and already in the possession of parent company Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB). The water requirement of 37 million cubic meters annually will be supplied from the Patratu reservoir of the Nalkari Dam. The India Ministry of Coal has "in principle" allocated Banhardih coal block (400 Million Tonnes) in Banhardih, Chandwa Tehsil, Latehar District to JSEB for the power station.[1]

The new units are proposed to be set up on land lying vacant at the existing Patratu Thermal Power Plant owned by JSEB.[1] The existing power station has an installed capacity of 840 MW. The generating units of the power plant are very old and operating at around 5% capacity - state-owned NTPC has been asked to help revive the existing plant.[2]

JSEB floated a tender for the two new 660 MW units in May 2014.[3]

However, as of May 2018 the project has yet to receive environmental clearance, and plans appear to be deferred or abandoned.
