Paul E. Steiger, former managing editor of The Wall Street Journal and a vice president at Dow Jones & Company, was been appointed chairman of the Pulitzer Prize Board in May 2006 - replacing Henry Louis Gates, Jr..

"Mr. Steiger has been a [Pulitzer Prize] board member since 1998. Members of the board, who serve a maximum of nine years, are traditionally elected to the top post for their ninth and final year, according to Sig Gissler, the administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes...

"Mr. Steiger joined The Journal as a reporter in 1966. He moved to The Los Angeles Times in 1968, ultimately becoming business editor there before returning to The Journal as an assistant managing editor in 1983. In 1992, a year after he was appointed managing editor, Mr. Steiger became a vice president at Dow Jones, which publishes The Journal.

"Mr. Steiger also serves as chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists... In 2002, he was the first recipient of the Leadership Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and in 2005, he received the Decade of Excellence Award from the World Leadership Forum, a British-based nonprofit organization."
