Mr Johnston is Chairman of the Nickel Institute, Vice Chairman of the Minerals Council of Australia, an Executive Council member and past President of the Chamber of Minerals & Energy (WA) and a board member of the Minerals Council of Australia. Mr Johnston is currently a director of Emeco Holdings Limited and Silver Lake Resources Limited.

"Mr Johnston was formerly employed by WMC Ltd from 1993 to 2001. During that period he held the position of Executive General Manager and at various times was responsible for the nickel and gold operations, Olympic Dam Operations, Queensland Fertilizers Ltd and human resources. He has also held senior positions with Lion Nathan Australia and Alcoa of Australia Limited."
