Petar Stoyanov "served as the President of the Republic of Bulgaria from 1997 to 2002, having been elected in 1996 as the candidate of the United Democratic Forces (UDF). Prior to becoming President, he served as Deputy Chairman of the UDF, a member of Bulgaria’s Parliament, Chairman of the UDF legal council, and Deputy Minister of Justice during Bulgaria’s first non-communist government since 1944."
