Background on Plant

Videocon signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government in 2007-8 to set up the Pipavav power station, and received an environmental clearance permit in 2010. However, the project has reportedly not kicked off "due to alleged cheating by local land broker."

In 2013, it was reported that the sponsor had acquired the entire 1,100 acres needed for the project, including 200 acres provided by the state government. The project had also received financial and placed an order with BHEL for machines for 1200 MW.

According to the details of criminal case filed by Videocon, the company paid land broker Dashrath Patel to acquire land for the power project. Videocon says Dashrath delayed the land acquisition, but finally delivered a piece of land - land that was later claimed as owned by someone else, halting project development. The company has filed a criminal complaint against Dashrath.

As of December 2016, there has been no news of the project for several years, and it appears to be abandoned.
