Pittston Coal Company is mining company that focuses on underground mines. Based in McClure, Virginia. In 1972 the company's coal slurry impoundment broke causing 132 million gallons of of black water waste to be released. Ultimately the spill killed 125 and destroyed 507 homes. The company was also the target of several major strikes throughout its history. [1]

Most notably, the Pittston strike in 1989-1990 was a nine month long strike in which workers demanded better health benefits to retired workers. In early January of 1990 an agreement between the labor union and the company was announced. Details of the agreement were not released.[2]
