Background on existing plant
In 2014 Luka Ploce energija proposed building an 800 MW coal-fired power station in the industrial zone of Ploče, Croatia.[2]
In January 2015 a local referendum on the proposed power station took place, where approximately 90% of participants said they did not want the power plant to be built in their town. The turn-out was 60% -- 10% above the required threshold, making the referendum valid.[3] The referendum decision is not binding for the permitting authorities or the company, but a day later project promoter Luka Ploce energija said it would respect the will of the local population.[1]
