Background
In June 2016, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Modern Cement and Mining Company (Al Manaseer) signed a memorandum of understanding to construct a 30-megawatt coal-fueled power plant. Under the memo no EIA is required, and construction of the plant would begin in July and be completed in two years. Al Manaseer will build the power plant, and once completed, it will supply the company’s cement factory in Qatraneh. Coal would be imported from the US, Russia, and Africa.[1]
In September 2018 Manaseer Group said it had commenced operations of the new coal and petcoke power plant project feeding its cement plant in Al Qatraneh, at a net capacity of 30 MW and a total investment value of USD 100 million.[2]
Public opposition
IndyACT and Climate Action Network oppose construction of the plant, saying an EIA should be carried out.[1]
