Background on Mine
The 10.5 million ton-per-annum Rajmahal coal mines were first opened in 1985. The mines are owned by Eastern Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India). The mines supply coal to both the nearby Farakka power station and Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station, both owned by the state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation.[1][2]
Proposed Expansion
In April 2012, Essel Mining and Industries Limited (EMIL) (a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group) won a 12.5-year contract to take over mining operations at the Rajmahal mines, and expand production to 17 MTPA.[3][4] The current status of this proposed takeover/expansion is unclear.
