Background on Mine
The 6.1 million ton-per-annum Rajrappa coal mine is a part of the Rajrappa Project, which includes the mine and the company town of Rajrappa. Rajrappa is apparently the only active mine on the Ramgarh coalfield; there are numerous abandoned coal mines on this coalfield, many of which are mined illegally. The mine is owned by Central Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India).[1]
The mine began an expansion to the western bank of the Damodar River in August 2012; the expansion will add 72 million tons of reserves to the mine.[2]
