In 1984 an article in the New Republic noted that "Ren Wanding, the founder of the Chinese Human Rights Alliance, has been detained without trial for the past five years." [1]

"Ren Wanding, founder of the China Human Rights League, was a leading figure in the 1978-79 Democracy Wall movement and campaigned for the release of political prisoners during the prodemocracy movement in 1989. He was first detained in 1979 after denouncing the government's arrest of co-recipient Wei Jingsheng and spent the next four years in prison. He was arrested again as a result of his 1989 activities and is now serving a seven-year sentence." 1995

"Ren Wanding is one of the fathers of the Chinese human rights movement. In the late 1970s, he was thrown into prison for founding the China Human Rights League. In the 1980s, he helped lead the demonstration in Tiananmen Square. In the 1990s, he was thrown in prison yet again." [2]
