Background

In 2009 it was reported that Orissa Thermal Power Corporation (OTPCL), a joint venture between state-owned Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) and Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) was planning a 2000 MW coal plant at Rengali. In 2010 it was reported that the project, now described as a 1000 MW plant, had been cancelled. In 2011 there was still a mention of the project on the website of Neyveli Lignite, though it is not clear that this is the same project. The website that "in principle approval of the Government of Orissa for allocation of land in Rengali Taluk of Sambalpur district in Orissa is awaited." However, in 2014, there was no longer any mention of the project on the Neyveli Lignite Corporation website.
