Background

A coal plant at Richards Bay was first proposed in 1997 and originally planned to be completed by 2012. It was revived by Umbani Power and an environmental impact assessment was prepared in 2008. Plans included a 270 MW plant, with the possibility of a second 270 MW plant. They would be powered by discarded coal from mines in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces. However, with no subsequent developments since 2008 it appears the project has been abandoned.
