In the acknowledgments of his 1998 book Imposing Wilderness, Neumann writes:
- "A number of institutions have provided funding for various stages of this study. The main period of fieldwork in Tanzania was supported by the Joint Committee on African Studies of the Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned Societies, with funds provided by the Rockefeller Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program, and a National Science Foundation, Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant. Research at collections in England was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the College of Arts and Sciences, Florida International University. A Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Program in Agrarian Studies, Yale University in 1994-95 allowed me to write or rewrite a significant portion of the book." (p.xii)
