Hughes is a political consultant [1], chairman of the Republican Party in Hamilton County, Iowa, as well as chairman of Iowa Presidential Watch/IowaPresidentialWatch.com, the website that during U.S. presidential election, 2004 called "Democratic candidate John Kerry a habitual liar and compar[ed] him to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels." [2]
