Background on Plant

The two-unit, 200-MW coal-fired Sakhalin GRES-1 power station is owned by RusHydro. The plant’s four currently productive units were brought online between 1965 and 1972. The plant's first two units have been retired.[1][2]

Running on aging equipment, the Sakhalin GRES-1 power station has been running below its nameplate capacity for years; it is planned to be shut down once the new Sakhalin GRES-2 power station is completed.
