Background on Plant

In December 2010 Gujarat-based Torrent Power proposed a 1,320 MW thermal power station at Sandila in Uttar Pradesh. The company expects to commission the project by the end of 2016, but as of 2013 had not yet secured environmental clearance or a coal linkage, and was given an 18-month extension on its terms of reference in December 2013.

In November 2014 the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission said it had quashed setting up four thermal power plants of over 1700 MW capacity, saying the companies were lagging far behind in completing the projects despite being given two extensions. Projects cancelled included Sandila.
