Background

Inaugurated in October 2014 at the Santa Ana Sugar Mill, the $75 million, 62 MW Santa Ana plant generates electricity from a mix of biomass and coal. During the November to May sugar cane harvest season, it runs on bagasse (cellulose fiber from crushed sugar cane stalks); from June to October, it runs on coal. In addition to generating energy for the sugar mill's daily operations, the plant provides electricity to 138,000 homes in the surrounding area.
