{{#badges:CoalSwarm|Navbar-Australiancoal}}The Sarum Coal Project is a coal open cut and underground mine project proposed by Glencore to produce both thermal and metallurgical coal.[1] The project is located 20 km south of Collinsville, Queensland, Australia.

This project appears to be on hold, with no mention of it on Glencore Australia's website.[2]

Coal is expected to be exported via Abbot Point Coal Terminal.[3]

Coal Mine Background

The mine was proposed by the Newlands, Collinsville, Abbot Point Joint Venture, which was 55% owned by Xstrata, 25% Itochu Coal Resources Australia, 10% ICRA NCA and 10% Sumisho Coal Australia project. In 2013 Glencore made a $44bn takeover of Xstrata to form Glencore Xstrata. The combined company's name changed to Glencore in 2014.[5] In December 2016 Glencore has acquired its joint venture partners' interests in the Newlands and Collinsville mines. Whether interests in the proposed Sarum mine were also sold is unclear.[3]

Tenements at the Sarum Project expire between April 2021 and May 2023. An application for the grant of a new Mineral Development Licence that covers the entire project area has been lodged.[6]

In 2010 the project had a notional commissioning date of 2014,[7] but little subsequent progression is evident.
