Background on Plant

In June 2011, initial permitting meetings were held in Sugözü for the construction of a 600-MW coal-fired power plant — on top of numerous other existing coal plant projects in the area. It is unclear whether there was an active sponsor for this project at this point, or whether the meetings were being held by TKI or by another Turkish government agency. Police used force against environmental protesters at one of the meetings.[1]

In May 2012, İpekyolu Enerji applied to build the 600-MW coal-fired Sedef II plant.[2][3] In November 2013, Akfen Enerji bought a 50% share in the project.[4][5][6]

As of 2015 the power station is still under permit evaluation.[7]

In 2017 the project's permit application was rejected.[8]
