Coal Mine Background

Shengli East No. 2 Open Pit Mine is one of the 10 ten-million-ton scale surface coal mines of the National 11th Five-Year Plan for coal industry. The project includes three phases.

Project phase I, whose production capacity is 10 million tonnes(Mt), has completed construction and passed the national inspection in 2010.

Phase II is the expansion project based upon the phase I, having production capacity of 30 Mt per year. Project Phase II was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission(NDRC) in February 2011. [1]

Project phase III, which has not begun construction, is expected to have capacity of 60Mt per year. It will then become the largest surface mine in Asia.[2]
