Background on Plant
The four existing coal-fired units of Shenhua Hequ power station, totaling 2,400 MW, were brought online between 2004 and 2011. The plant is owned by Shanxi Luneng Hequ Electricity Generation Co.[1]
Description of Expansion
Shanxi Luneng Hequ Electricity Generation Co is planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, units 5-6, with a total planned capacity of 1,320 MW. The units are scheduled to be completed in 2017.[2][3][4][5]
Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity
In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including units 5-6 of Shenhua Hequ. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.[6]
