Background on Plant

Sines power station is a four-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,250 MW. The plant was completed between 1985 and 1987, and is owned by Energias de Portugal. Coal is imported via covered conveyor from Sines Port.[1]

In October 2019 the government announced the Pego power station would be closed by the end of 2021 and Sines by September 2023, after which the country will have no operating coal-fired power plants.[2]
