Background on Plant
In November 2009 it was reported that he West Bengal government was considering setting up a thermal power plant on the land in Singur that in 2007 was leased to Tata Motors Ltd for a small car project. The power plant would be built by West Bengal Power Development Corp. Ltd (WBPDCL), and would likely consist of two units generating 800MW each.[1]
Only a few weeks later it was reported that Bharat Heavy Electricals said it was unable to put up the proposed power project at Tata Motors' abandoned Singur site, in a written communication to WBPDCL, saying the land was too small, the nearest source of water was at least 18-20 km away, and coal transportation would be a problem.[2]
