Sirkazhi power station

Background on Plant

Sindya Power Generating Company received environmental clearance for 1,320 MW coal-fired power station in March 2013. It was proposed that it source coal from Indonesia/South Africa.

In October 2017 NLC India Limited (NLCIL) confirmed the project, which had initially been touted as a 3,960 MW plant, had been shelved. (The company said the first phase of the project was to have been 1,980 MW.)

The Hindu reported:

"A director of the company says the details regarding the project cost were revisited, and on scrutiny, it was found that electricity generated from a pithead power plant, even after taking into account wheeling charges, would be cheaper compared to the proposed Sirkazhi plant."
