Background

The project obtained environmental clearance on December 27, 2010. It will use supercritical technology.[1][2]

As of 2014 the project is under construction.[3][2]

In October 2016 three workers were killed by a falling 100-ton girder.[4]

Unit 1 was commissioned in April 2017.[5]

Unit 2 is planned for 2018,[6] later pushed to 2019.[7]

Unit 2 was commissioned in March 2019.[8][9]

Opposition

On April 17, 2015, hundreds of farmers and land owners began protesting the project site, demanding higher compensation from NTPC for their lands acquired for the power station. According to The Hindu Business Line, a platoon of 150 police personnel were deployed, and the construction site - spread over 2,000 acres - was declared a prohibited area under the Official Secrets Acts.[10]
