The Sustainable Minerals Institute was set up "in 2001 as a result of a $10 million grant from the Queensland State Government. From inception in 2001, the brief has been to develop new research opportunities. This is done in two ways: by identifying major challenges facing the global industry and developing new expertise and research; and by linking the complementary skills within the Institute to undertake cross-disciplinary projects." The SMI was set up at the University of Queensland and has "been developed in extremely strong association with the minerals industry and the Queensland Government." [1] [2]
The SMI comprises six research Centres:
- WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre
- The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre
- Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining
- Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation
- Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre
- Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry
The Institute is headed by Professor Chris Moran.
