Background

In 2009 the Steel Authority Of India (SAIL) stated its interest in establishing an open cast coking coal mine in Tasra, in the Jharia coalfields, about 25 km from Dhanbad. In 2013 Lanco was selected as the Mine developer and operator (MDO) by SAIL. Changes in land acquisition laws subsequently thwarted the project’s progress, as some villagers refused to sell their land. In 2017 it was announced Lanco will also develop and operate a captive power plant of 300 MW for SAIL through a joint venture company, based on the secondary products arising out of the coal mine washery.[1]
