Background

In 2007 the Sindh government issued a letter of intent (LOI) to Hassan Associates for four 250 MW coal plants and coal mines in the Thar area. According to Sindh Minister for Mining and Mineral Development Irfanullah Khan Marwat, the project would be fast tracked and completed in 38 months at an estimated cost of US$1.2 billion. The minister said that the company would provide a bank guarantee of $5-$7 million within a week, and physical work on the project would begin with a month. There are no further reports on this project, and it appears to have been abandoned.
