Background
On March 27, 2012, Tata Power inked an MoU with the state energy department for the Rs 1,200 crore power plant, from which Jharkhand would get 25 per cent of power generated. Tiruldih Power Project is proposed to comprise 3 x 660 MW units. The proposed plant is slated to come up in villages Chara, Porka, Kuda and Sirkadih of Ichagarh Tehsil. Water for the proposed thermal plant would be met from Subernarekha while coal would be sourced from Latehar’s Tubed mines. In 2013 Tata said it had acquired 50% of the land needed.[2]
An EIA was submitted in May 2013.[3]
As of 2014 Tata's website (undated) said land acquisition "is expected to take around 12-18 months," but does not mention dates.[4] In January 2015 it was reported that the project was "delayed amid issues related to land acquisition and central coal block de-allocations," and "out of the total requirement of 1,200 acres, [Tata] has been able to acquire only 463 acres."[5]
As of December 2017 the project has yet to receive environmental clearance.
Coal supply
The company also states that "in principle, clearance has been received from the Railways for the transportation of coal from Tubed Coal Block. This block has been jointly allotted to Tata Power and Hindalco in Jharkhand."[4]
Charm campaign
In October 2011 Tata Power organised a "science fair" at the Tiruldih village school. "Students of Class- VI – VIII were taught to make simple models based on basic science. These models were then displayed in the Science Fair where hundreds of students from various other schools visited the fair. The Science Fair was a one day program and best student participants were also recognized and awarded," Tata Power stated in a media release. Tata stated that the fair "is a first of its kind in the State of Jharkhand".[6]
