Background on Plant

The two existing coal-fired units of Tongfa Xuangang power station, totaling 1,320 MW, were brought online in 2010. The plant is owned by Datong Coal Mining Group.[1][2]

Description of Expansion

Datong Coal is currently planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 1,320 MW. The new units were scheduled to be completed in 2015,[3][4] but as of June 2015 the units have yet to receive environmental clearance for construction.[5]

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Tonghua Xuangang. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.[6]
