"Transition thinking and discussion began in Totnes with presentations and film screenings organised by Naresh Giangrande and Rob Hopkins in late 2005. This ‘awareness raising’ period culminated in September 2006 with a launch event called the ‘Official Unleashing’ of what then became known as ‘Transition Town Totnes’ (TTT). That event proved to be the catalyst for much that followed, with TTT now being seen as one of the primary community organisations in the town with a wide range of projects and a diversity of impacts. Funding
"Since 2007 there has been a paid project admin coordinator supporting the project, initially funded through a local donation and from April 2008 – April 2010 by grants from the Ashden Trust. Financially we are stretched to cover our core costs and we are in the process of implementing a strategy to ensure we become financially self-sustaining in three years.
"Other funded roles have included Project Support (£10,000 from Polden-Puckham Charitable Foundation), Transition Together (£20,000 from Big Green Challenge plus £10,000 from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation ), Energy Descent Action Plan (£39,000 from Esmee Fairburn Foundation and £5,000 from APE), funding support (local donation).
"In 2010 we won a significant award of £625,000 from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (UK Government) as part of the Low Carbon Communities Challenge. This financed the Transition Streets project, which has resulted in further paid roles and a dramatic increase in community engagement." [3]
