Commissioning of Unit 6

In 2013 Gujarat State Electricity Corporation commissioned unit 6 of 500 MW, the first unit added to the power station since 1985.

Retirement of units 1-2

In May 2015 GSECL said it was commissioning a feasibility study to replace the power station's two oldest 120 MW units with supercritical technology, extending their life and possibly their size (MW).

The two units were retired in 2017.

Unit 7

In February 2018, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) applied for a terms of reference to construct a new 800 MW supercritical unit at the site of the Ukai Thermal Power Station. The new unit would replace units 1-3, once they are all retired and dismantled.

The terms of reference for the new unit was granted on September 4, 2018.
