Retirement of units 1-2

In May 2015 GSECL said it was commissioning a feasibility study to replace the power station's two oldest 120 MW units with supercritical technology, extending their life and possibly their size (MW).[8]

The two units were retired in 2017.[3]

Unit 7

In February 2018, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) applied for a terms of reference to construct a new 800 MW supercritical unit at the site of the Ukai Thermal Power Station. The new unit would replace units 1-3, once they are all retired and dismantled.[9]

The terms of reference for the new unit was granted on September 4, 2018.[10]
