Background
ISS Global Mining, an Independent Power Producer (IPP), is proposing construction of a coal-fired power plant on a site near the town of Kriel in the Mpumalanga Province. The project is to be known as the Umbani Power Plant and would have a generating capacity of up to 600 MW. The electricity generated by the project is to be fed into the Eskom grid. A Draft Scoping Report was submitted in April 2014.[1]
The proposed power plant would source coal from the nearby Dorstfontein East Coal Mine and utilize various grades of coal and coal discards.[2]
However, as of May 2017 there has been no further developments on the plant in over three years, and it appears to be shelved or abandoned.
